There are few moments more memorable than your child's first birthday. Jake's parents came to us with the vision of hosting a first birthday celebration for their son Jake that would be fun for everyone - from the little kids, to the big champagne-drinking kids, too!
Brighton locals, Jessica and Travis wanted to host the party in a venue that was relaxed, casual and close to home. After a few days hunting the local area, we came across the Brighton Schoolhouse Café in Church Street, and we instantly knew that we had found the perfect place. Built in 1842, this heritage listed building is a hidden gem: a former schoolhouse with a unique floor plan offering a main communal area, several smaller breakout spaces, outdoor seating and a playground.
We knew it was important to create an atmosphere where everyone could celebrate together. We planned the spaces carefully to make sure everything felt connected, creating an 'adults' space where guests could enjoy a giant antipasto platter and bubbles, and a smaller 'kids room' where the little party-goers could play and munch on party food from decorated tables.
One week out from the big day, Jess and Travis decided they wanted to give the party a circus theme. Lucky for them, we love a good challenge! Without a moment to lose, we set out to put together the greatest show on earth. We transformed the 'kids room' with vintage circus toys, games and a face-painting clown, and decorated two long tables with giant balloons and party hats. A mixture of big, vintage coloured balloons throughout the space complimented the venues high ceilings and raw textures. The theme was also worked in across all the party collateral - from circus inspired menu and party hats, to the directional signage.
Guests arrived from early evening, and the party kicked off with children's pony rides and entertainment from Animals 2 You - whose pony Eskimo completely stole the show! There was smiles and laughter all round, from young to old.
The highlight of the day was the moment Jake's birthday cake came out. The super-talented Chris from Let Them Eat Cake did a remarkable job of taking our theme to create the ultimate 1st Birthday cake - a giant circus cupcake tower, with a gorgeous circus mini cake in the shape of a tent on the top. It was all things a kid's birthday cake should be: bright, playful and delicious!
We had so much fun helping bring this very special moment to life. Big thanks to Jessica and Travis for giving us the rains to do what we do best, and to the amazing crew:
